WHEELING – Dominic Sambuco grew up a soccer player, earning all-Presidents Athletic Conference honors at Geneva College.

The 24-year-old Sambuco has matriculated to the Ohio Valley since his college days and Saturday morning won the 5K Run, presented by Bordas & Bordas, during the Ogden Newspapers Wellness Weekend, presented by WVU Medicine.

“I ran this race before and finished second,” Sambuco said. “I really didn’t use that to motivate me today. I just wanted to go with the swing of things and enjoy the race, and I finished in first place. So I’m happy with that.”

The Peters Township High School graduate clocked out in 17 minutes, 35 seconds. He defeated runner-up Lucas McCamick by three seconds.

“A lot of the (younger) kids went out fast and after they kind of settled down, I kind of broke away from them,” he recalled. “There was another guy right on my tail the entire time.”

When asked about the weather conditions, Sambuco replied, “The prediction was for rain. I’m glad it didn’t. Overcast and 60 degrees, I can’t complain.”

Finishing third was Liam Liberatore in 18:11.69, barely nosing out Matthew Shirley, who timed out in 18:11.86. Evan Yost was fifth in 19:50.
