SUPPLEMENTS #9: VITAMIN A – Vitamin A is needed for vision and immune function. It was named “A” as the first vitamin identified in 1913. In the eye, this fat soluble vitamin is concentrated in cells next to a protein called rhodopsin. When light energy hits vitamin A, it changes its chemical shape as electron clouds absorb the light energy. This shape change then causes the proteins and vitamin A to come apart sending an electrical impulse through the optic nerves to the back of the brain in the visual cortex where these signals are assembled into a visual image (See the slide). Vitamin A can be formed from carotenoids including beta-carotene in fruits and vegetables or found as vitamin A in fortified dairy products and meat. Vitamin A is stored in the liver and liver extracts were used to treat night blindness in ancient Egypt. Globally. vitamin A deficiency causes blindness in children in poor countries. These children also get mumps and measles due to loss of the immune function of vitamin A. Vitamin A can damage liver and bone at high doses (above 8500 to 10,000 IU) so most vitamins contain a mixture of bets-carotene and vitamin A in safe amounts (3500 to 5000 IU). Take vitamin A and beta-carotene in your Multivitamin but not as a separate supplement to maintain Balanced Nutrition!! Next time, I will talk about Vitamin D supplements!! -So stay tuned!!!
