Residents of the Usera neighbourhood reacted this Tuesday to the local increase in cases of coronavirus, which according to statements from the Community of Madrid puts this area of the Spanish capital near the top of the number of infections in Europe.
Footage shows the outside of the 12 de Octubre Hospital located in Usera, and also neighbours taking a break in some of the neighborhood squares and people walking without wearing masks.
“It’s the immigration issue, people who live in crowded, very small apartments, a lot of people live like this. And, apart from this, there are people who came from overseas, not all of them, because there’s always people who strictly obey the rules like any of us do, but a lot of people don’t respect this,” said Francisca, a resident of Usera.
For others in the neighbourhood, the increase in cases is something that is not yet noticeable.
“It’s hard to compare, because we don’t know other districts, but we don’t see many cases. We do see patients from time to time, but, generally, it isn’t something exorbitant. As a matter of fact, it seems like people recovered the confidence and they’re going out, doing a normal life again,” said Angel de la Macorra, a pharmacist from Usera.
According to an epidemiological report issued Tuesday by the Community of Madrid, Usera has 993 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, one of the highest rates in the region.
Spain has a total of 525,549 positive cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, and 29,516 deaths related to the disease.
