Protein powders have been a staple in the dietary supplement industry since the 1970s. In the beginning, milk and egg proteins were popular amongst health and fitness enthusiasts. Soon after, whey protein emerged as a sophisticated alternative.

Around the same time that whey protein garnered mainstream acceptance, the first plant-based protein, soy protein, made its debut. Other plant-based powder supplement options subsequently entered the marketplace, including pea protein and rice protein but they were predominantly purchased by female vegan and vegetarian consumers.

Over the last 50 years, a lot has changed. Nowadays, plant-based protein supplement options are popular with men and women that are looking to build muscle, support their weight management goals, or are simply looking for a dairy-free alternative.

In our latest podcast, Gene Bruno, MS, MHS, RH(AHG) and Ryan Gillen will discuss the use of plant proteins in sports nutrition products and why dietary supplement brand owners would be wise to add a high-quality, plant-based protein product to their line.
