Covid-19 has taken the lives of many, especially those over 65 years of age and with comorbidities like high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and heart disease. In simple language I attempt to describe how the our immune systems work and why it seems to be failing against Covid-19. This understanding becomes even more important as we approach the cold and flu season. Another attack on our health. Just imagine how pure our foods and environment where a hundred years ago. Chickens and cows weren’t fed chemicals, the skies were pretty clear of pollutants, we weren’t taking all kinds of medicines seeking a cure, insecticides did not dominate the landscape. Our bodies, like any machine, are capacity limited. They can only seek and destroy so many invaders (foreign substances) without becoming overwhelmed. What we now see in response to Covid-19 viral infections is often a delayed response of our immune systems followed later on by an overwhelming inflammatory response, causing lung inflammation and congestion. The immune system is having a difficult time distinguishing between good germs and substances and bad ones. Thus by the time COVID-19 virus embeds itself and aggressively replicates in the back of our throats and sinus passages, the initial response of our immune system has failed to eradicate the virus. Later on, once the virus has gone into full production replicating itself by the thousands, the immune system sends out an explosive response. This response leads to inflammation as shown by an accumulation of swelling and fluid buildup in the respiratory system. Now we are facing major problems because the inflamed, mucous covered lung tissue can no longer receive oxygen and carry it throughout the body the way it’s supposed to. This video describes the role of the immune system. My next video will describe how to FORTIFY YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM AGAINST INFECTIONS.
Everyone can do something to help themselves in this fight against COVID-19 and the kindness thing anyone can do, big or small, is to MASK UP! Don’t let this pandemic last another year as it did with the Spanish Flu of 1918. This isolation is lonely and hard on many. We must all do our part to end it.
