The medic joined Good Morning Britain to speak about a group of scientists’ calls for the ‘herd immunity’ approach to the coronavirus pandemic, calling to only isolate the elderly and vulnerable and allow the young and healthy to contract coronavirus. Herd immunity is where enough people contract and beat the virus to give them an immunity and to protect those who have not caught it by acting as a buffer between them and an infected person. Dr Hilary warned that the approach may be more risky than helpful as there is no guarantee herd immunity is achievable for coronavirus, similarly to measles.
