If you have read my blog or listened to any of my videos about stress and the media, then you know that I want folks to take EVERYTHING in the media with a “large dose of salt.” This is unfortunate, but a reality. I remember thinking several years ago when a study came out about vitamin E being bad for you after thinking it was so good for you. Talk about confused? Then I had the benefit of learning more about how to deeply analyze medical studies when I studied for my nutrition degree. I have forgotten most of the statistical stuff, but learned some key points that anyone can use to have a critical eye about any study or poll that is published in the media. If the media review does not supply this critical information, then take that with suspicion and dig further. Go to the poll or study itself and look for more information to decide whether to take it seriously or not.
Here are a few key points that I review in the video:
– Why was the study or poll undertaken?
– Who conducted the study or poll?
– Who funded the research or poll?
– How was the data collected?
– What is the sample size and response rate?
– Does the research make use of secondary data?
– Does the research measure what it claims?
– Can the information be generalized to me or people in general?
– For research studies, has it been peer reviewed?
