Today I wanted to quickly go over 5 nutrition facts which may impress your friends! Let me know if you knew them already.

1) The white spots in your fingernails are probably not a sign of calcium or zinc deficiency! The most common cause of Leukonychia, the white spots in your nails, is due to minor injuries in the area when your nail is growing. However, if there are extreme colour changes then it is probably best if you see your doctor.
2) The phrase that humans require 2.5 litres of water a day is misquoted. The original statement from the Food and Nutrition Board Paper in 1945 is: ‘humans require roughly 2.5 litres per day, we get most of the fluid from food and other beverages.’ However, water is extremely healthy so do consume it rather than fruit juices or soft drinks.
3) Over 20% of all calories consumed in the world is from rice. To make it worse, there are over 50,000 edible plants but humans have only concentrated on three: rice, wheat and maize. Try to have a varied diet and try different types of foods.
4) Peeling some fruits and vegetables is throwing away nutrients! For example, peeling an apple will cause it to lose 50% fibre and 30% vitamin C. Similar values apply to potatoes. You can even eat the skin of a kiwi!
5) Names of foods can be misleading. Peanuts are not nuts, they are legumes (same family as peas and lentils). Almonds, pistachios, walnuts and cashews are not technically nuts either but can be considered tree nuts. Also, a strawberry is not a berry, but a banana is. To make it more strange, a watermelon is a berry.
