**The Human Microbiome and Immune System in Light of Covid-19**
Dr. Katerina Johnson is a biologist and science communicator from the University of Oxford. She specialises in the microbiome, one of the most rapidly developing and exciting areas of research in biology. She recently gave a popular TEDx talk on the role that our gut microbiome may play in our future healthcare and wellbeing, titled ‘The Secret Power of Your Poo’ (

Dr Johnson actively communicates science to the public and media in a way that’s entertaining and understandable, but at the same time covers cutting-edge research. Katerina has received numerous awards for her work in public engagement and has been featured on many national and international TV and radio stations (e.g. Sky News, BBC News, ITV, CTV, BBC Radio 4 & World Service), as well as in newspapers and books, and also speaking at events.

Whilst her PhD was on the science of that ‘gut feeling’ and how the gut microbiome (community of microorganisms living in the gut) can affect the brain, she has a broad knowledge of biology with her research also spanning fields such as animal behaviour, neuroscience and evolution. She particularly enjoys talking about scientific findings that have the potential to widely affect our lives or with implications for understanding the nature of who we are.
