Dr Ross Perry shares invaluable advice on getting enough vitamin D in quarantine/lockdown, while still protecting your skin. He says:
“I think given the current situation with everybody being indoors a lot, it is important that when we do actually make an outside excursion, that we do get enough vitamin D; and the reason for this is obviously it helps boost our immune system, but also helps with our general mood.”
“So in order to do this I’d still certainly would advise that patients use sunblock for their face, but what I often advise patients to do is, when they are outside, in order to get the maximum dose of vitamin D during that time outside, is to expose their arms and legs.”
“The greater surface area of skin that you have exposed, the greater amount of vitamin D that you will make. It is not just your face that makes vitamin D, it is your arms and your legs. So certainly if you do have time to go outside – for 20 minutes or more each day would be the recommended amount – you should then keep your vitamin D levels up to the maximum level that they need to be at; which will help not only boost your immune system but it’ll also make you help you feel better. ”
