TOPIC OF THE WEEK – Are Multi Vitamins really needed?
Hi, I’m Lee Labrada, your Lean Body Coach. One of the questions that I get asked from time to time from my students is whether they need a multivitamin.
The question comes up because a lot of the athletes I speak with feel that they already get enough vitamins from their food. So the question then, is “vitamins or no vitamins?”
Well, if every day you ate a perfectly balanced, wholesome diet composed of a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, and lean proteins, then you probably would have little need for a multivitamin.
Unfortunately, if you’re like most people, you may find it impractical, or even impossible, to eat right every meal, every day. Not only do most athletes not eat perfectly, they also put extraordinary demands on their bodies, which increases their body’s need for vitamins and minerals.
That’s why I recommend that all athletes take a good natural multivitamin. A multivitamin will provide you with nutritional insurance to make sure your body is performing and recovering optimally.
Now a word about the SOURCE of your multivitamins. Nature intended for you to consume food in WHOLE form because all the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and enzymes are provided together in one package. They work synergistically to give your body the nutrition it requires for optimal health.
So my advice is that you stick with vitamins made from whole food sources when possible.
Food based vitamins are derived from concentrated natural whole foods, whereas; most common vitamins are completely synthesized in a lab. Some synthetic vitamin formulas are inferior because they only deliver a fraction of the highly complex structures such as antioxidants, coenzymes, enzymes, and trace elements found in whole food formulas.
