Do you know that 40% of Singaporeans are vitamin D deficient? Hi, I’m Louis B. Hong, a senior dieticians at Mount Elizabeth Hospital. Vitamin D helps the growth and development of bones and teeth and promotes immunity. It is the only vitamin that can be produced by our bodies. It is mainly produced in the skin when exposed to ultraviolet B from the sun. Despite abundance of sunlight in Singapore, many of us are lacking in it. Modern indoor lifestyles, age, skin tone, sun protection habits, and insufficient vitamin D intake contribute to low levels of vitamin D. To help your body make enough vitamin D, try to spend about 5 to 30 minutes outdoors at least twice a week. The best time to do so is between 10:00 a.m. to 300 p.m. Besides sunlight, we can also get them from food sources high in vitamin D like eggs and fatty fish. However, since there aren’t many naturally occurring vitamin D foods, products fortified with vitamin D like cereal and low-fat milk are good alternatives. Also, the more vitamin D you get from your diet, the better you can protect your skin from sun damage.
