Hey guys, and welcome back to Mad About Skin. In today’s video, we are kicking off a new series that I’m running here on the channel called the Hall of Fame, Hall of Shame series. In this series, we’re going to take a specific skin care ingredient. We’re going to look at the very best formulations and the very worst. That way, hopefully, it’ll give you some guidance when you know what to look out for for choosing products for your individual skincare routines. Everything is unique when we’re talking about skincare. We need to choose products that are going to match our budget, our skin type, and the outcomes that we want to see. So, hopefully this video will help you really hone in on what are the good and the bad options when it comes to each ingredient. Today, of course, we’re kicking off with vitamin C, one of my favorite skincare ingredients to talk about. So, sit back, relax, let’s talk the best and worst vitamin C serums. Now, this series kind of came about as a result of requests from you guys. I’m always happy to talk about the very best in a specific category or ingredient, but often you guys just said, “Okay, tell us what the worst options are.” That way, you know, to avoid them, but also maybe we could learn some lessons about what makes them true fails in one specific ingredient or the other. So, hopefully this video will help you navigate your way through the seas of skincare. If you like the idea of this series and want to see more, make sure to let me know by reaching down into the comment section and leaving the heart emoji. Also, let me know what ingredient you want to feature next. I’m going to try and cover as much as possible. Today’s about vitamin C, but tomorrow could be about anything. So, let me know what the next ingredient you want to feature on this series is. Now, I’ve got a lot to get through in today’s video. I decided to dress up, you know, throw a shirt on to celebrate the start of a new series and to apologize for once again having this really boring background. My normal filming stu studio is having some work done on it and that finishes literally today. It was supposed to be a few days ago. They’re running behind. Finishes today. So, tomorrow I promise you and I will promise to never let you down that we will be in the old studio again. But in the meantime, we have the world’s most boring background, but I threw on a shirt to hopefully jazz things up. So, in true mad about skin style, let’s cut that waffle and del straight on in. I have got 10 products in the vitamin C category to talk about. Seven. Ding ding ding holy grails and threewah total fails. Now, the reason I’ve got a few more holy grails and fails is I always like to put a little bit of a positive slant on life. You know, let’s focus on those positive vibes whilst also talking about some of the less than positive ones. So, we do have a slight skew towards the good rather than the bad. And that is deliberate, so don’t read me to fill up in the comments. So, kicking things off with the Hall of Fame. I’ve left some time stamps down in the description box below. If you want to just delve straight into the shameful ones later on in the video, you be my guest. So, kicking things off strong with a product that I have kind of fallen increasingly in love with over the past 2 years, and that’s the timeless vitamin C. This is in the hall of fame for so many different reasons. First of all, the packaging. Truly airless pump packaging. So, if you like that style of packaging on your vitamin C, I think Timeless do it very, very well. I love the fact that you have two strengths. We’ve got the 10 here, which I think my skin probably prefers, though I am dabbling with the 20, which is the one in yellow. But there’s two for each. If you got sensitive skin, go for the 10. If you want those quick results, go for the 20. This has a beautiful blend of antioxidants alongside that vitamin C, and it’s fresh, fresh, fresh. They sell millions of units of this, so you know their turnover is strong. It’s not going to be sat on a dusty warehouse shelf. Freshness is key with vitamin C, and this ticks a lot of boxes. Great price point, great packaging, great formulation, two different strengths. We are off to an absolute flying star, and I do love a touch of Timeless. Now, my other like go-to, I’d say Timeless is one of my definite go-tos, but the one that probably I’ve used most in the last three years would be the Geek and Gorgeous Ca Glow. Now, Geek and Gorgeous are my absolute favorite skincare brand. I It’s just unparalleled. Every one of their products works. They have true innovative formulations. Not everything is the same. Uh the price point is divine and their customer service. You very rarely have a problem with Geek and Gorgeous, but if you do and you contact them, it’s resolved like that. Customer service A+ and just the whole line is amazing. Their Seag Glow though is truly unique on the market because they make it fresh just for you every single week. So, if you place your order direct with Geek and Gorgeous, you know that when they when it arrives, it is no older than 7 days. Super fresh. It doesn’t get better than that. Great blend of other antioxidants. and the price point. It’s actually the cheapest one that’s featuring in today’s list. So, if you like your budget friendly vitamin C’s, Geek and Gorgeous is where it’s at. It just ticks a lot of boxes. Now, up next in terms of the vitamin C hall of fame, we have two products from Medicate. This is their C tetra advanced, their newest launch, and this is the Medicate Super Curu. Now, both of these are amazing, but they’re very different. So, you need to choose the right one depending on what you want from the product. So this one, the C tetra advanced is the best vitamin C derivative on skincare planet earth. This gives you that beautiful glow, that lit from within radiance that I haven’t actually got from any other vitamin C serum. If you’re using your vitamin C just for the glow game, that radiance boost for that luminosity, this this is the one you need to reach for. It’s stunning. You’ll get that glow after just two uses and the formulation is divine. This is actually the most potent vitamin C derivative that you’re going to find. So, if your skin can’t tolerate pure form vitamin C, but you still want the results, go for this derivative. So, super gentle, won’t stress the skin out, but hands down the most potent one you’re going to find. This is A+. And whilst you’ve probably seen quite a lot of sponsored content around this product, they’ve reached out to a lot of content creators and said, “Here’s some coin to promote our product.” know that here on Metabout Skin, you will never see a sponsorship or a paid partnership. I turned down that coin to help preserve my independence. And so, don’t forget to hit that like button if you enjoy and appreciate truly independent content. This is my own thoughts from the heart, not the wallet. An amazing amazing product. And the Super Curu is basically an amazing vitamin C for people that like pure form vitamin C. If you like your pure form hit, which the Timeless, the Geek and Gorgeous, and this medicate one are all pure form ascorbic acid, then this is a wonderful option. It’s the closest dupe to the skin suitical CE furulic now that that patent has fallen off that you’re going to find. Half the price of skin suiticles, basically the same formulation. Definitely definitely a win. Now, I’ve spoken about the most affordable options early on in the video because I am super drugstore. In fact, I’m cheap. I hate overpaying unless I have to. So, I always start with the most affordable and build my way up because I always want to be mindful that we all have individual budgets and I want to make sure nobody is ever excluded in any of these videos. So, we started on the most affordable with Geek and Gorgeous and Timeless and we’re building up to some of the slightly more pricey options that I do think if your budget allows you to purchase will make a wonderful addition to your skincare routine. And up next, we have this. This is the Dr. Sam Flawless Vitamin C N AD Serum. Now, the reason I’m calling this out isn’t because there’s anything particularly innovative in terms of the vitamin C. It uses a blend of pure form and derivatives to give you a really nice balanced approach to that vitamin C, but what makes this really special is the other ingredients that they formulate alongside. You’ve got the NAD, which brightens the skin, is also pro collagen, so fantastic for anti-aging. You’ve got a blend of other ingredients in here which are really going to help boost the radiance and luminosity and fade that hyperpigmentation. So, if you’re somebody that is really struggling to get on top of your hyperpigmentation game, you want something that’s going to have a real punch behind it to help supercharge it, I think this is worth every single penny. Again, beautiful pump packaging for those that like it. I think this is something pretty special. Now, I would say you only need to reach for this if you have very stubborn hyperpigmentation. If you do absolutely give this a go because I think it’ll work so so well for you. For everyone else out there, you might want to opt for one of the cheaper options which is absolutely fine. But this amazing if fighting hyperpigmentation is your number one concern and then we have what is before I come on to an honorable mention what is the most expensive of the options today which is this the Alice skin 20% vitamin C brightening and firming serum. Now this does come with a hefty price point. But the reason I say that this is worth every single penny, cent, dollar, whatever you call it, um, is because of the speed that this acts. The fastest vitamin C bar none. It has a beautiful formulation that actually hydrates. So, if you’re somebody that finds vitamin C particularly drying on the skin, this could work really well for you. And it contains glutathione alongside a highdose vitamin C. If you want to just get your summer skin going without having to wait for results, this is it. After a couple of uses, you will definitely notice that your hyperpigmentation is breaking apart, that your glow game is returning, and your skin is more luminous than ever, and that you’re just having really good skin days. That that’s all I can really call this, a good skin day in a bottle. Now, like I say, it doesn’t come with the cheapest price point, so it might not be for everyone out there, which is absolutely fine. Long-term use of any of the other more affordable products will give you the same results. But if you want those results in a flash, you don’t want to wait. This this is where it’s at and I love it. I do have a discount code with Allies of Skin, which actually I use my own discount code when I purchase from them, which if you want to know what that is, it’s down in the description box below. That’ll take 20% off, which does bring that price point down. It’s not the cheapest. It never claims to be. But if you’re somebody that’s impatient and you want those results now, you will not get a faster vitamin C than this. Now, last in the vitamin C hall of fame, before we touch on the hall of shame, I just want to call out the prequel vitamin C. Now, the reason I say this is a special mention is because I actually haven’t tried this. Now, that might seem weird on a channel that is basically me. Um, but the reason I wanted to call this out is anytime I talk about vitamin C, the comments are flooded, literally flooded with recommendations for the pre-qual vitamin C. It’s a great price point. I love the formulation. Just reading about the ingredients and how it’s created, I think this is a standout product. But it’s based on the recommendations that you guys throw at me time and time again that I want to include this. We’re a community here on Mad About Skin. We’re more than just me sat here chit chatting. We’re a community. And I think this is probably the number one most recommended vitamin C in the comment section. So, I’m throwing in here. It’s not available in the UK, which is why I haven’t tried it. If you’re in the US and you can get your hands on this, I would I think it’s worth giving it a go just based on the results that people have said. If you’re a huge fan of Prequel, come forward. Don’t hold your peace. Come forward and sound off in the comment section below and let people know what results you got. Give me like your vitamin C before and after. I would love love love to hear that. Now, those are the ding-ding holy grails. Unfortunately, we now have to touch on somewah total fails. And I’ve got three that I’m going to call out. Now, these three represent categories of what I’m going to call like bad vitamin C’s. So, hopefully this will help you to know what to avoid when it comes to choosing one for your own routine. First up, let’s talk the inkulist vitamin C. Now, the reason I’m calling this out is because they don’t disclose the percentage. There is no point putting a vitamin C on your skin if you don’t know what strength it’s in. That’s because vitamin C is a little bit on the irritating side. You need to know what you’re using. If you have a very sensitive skin type, you’re going to want to go in for something in a 5 to 10% concentration. If you have a very resilient skin type that doesn’t, you know, irritate easily, you can go up to a 20% concentration to get the best results. But if you don’t know what’s in a product, how can you possibly match it to your individual skin’s needs? You’re just wasting your money and you’re running a whole lot of risks. I would avoid any vitamin C that doesn’t disclose the percentage. And the Inky List are one of those. I just think, what have they got to hide? What are we hiding here? The Inky List aren’t particularly transparent. They don’t go in big for percentages where it matters. They’ll happily share a percentage of an ingredient which doesn’t really matter what strength it’s in, but they somehow hide the ones where it does matter. Baffling to me. Absolutely baffling. So, I would avoid. Um, and I would just say this isn’t just the inky list. It applies to any brand that won’t disclose their percentage. Now, up next in the hall of shame is the Lash Pose Vitamin C Serum. Now, I know you’re all going to go, “Oh, here it goes again, hating on Lash Pose.” They’re not my favorite skincare brand for a multitude of reasons. However, they do have some good products. You know, they have their hits, they have their misses. They do have some good products, but their serums collectively are hands down some of the worst formulated in the industry. If you don’t believe me, I did a shorts video that captures all of that, which I’ll link up there. Check it out, and hopefully then that’ll set some context for that. I think one of their worst serums though is their vitamin C specifically because they added color to it recently. This is a bit of a shady move because lots of people online were complaining that the product was coming oxidized. Vitamin C needs to be fresh. It oxidizes quickly. When it oxidizes, it turns like a yellowy orangey brownish color and it’s much less effective. You don’t want to be using oxidized vitamin C because it just won’t deliver for you. Brands obviously can’t hide the fact it’s oxidized because it turns that yellowy brownish color. So what do they do? They stick colorant in it and that way we can’t tell. It’s always supposed to be that sort of yellowy orangey color. Really? Really? They must think that we like were born yesterday and fall for this nonsense. If your vitamin C is colored, it has added colorant into it. Move on. Move on. They’re hiding something. There is no need for color to be added to your vitamin C other than to disguise something else that’s going on. So, if your vitamin C is colored, get rid of it. It needs to be clear. It needs to be transparent so we know that it’s not oxidized. Now, last but by no means least on the hall of shame is the skin suiticles CE furuic. Now, this isn’t me coming for skin suiticles. This ink product actually revolutionized vitamin C when it launched 10 years ago. And I think we all have a lot of gratitude to pay towards skin suiticles and the research and development that they put into this. However, 10 years later, their patent has fallen off and now there’s a million and one dupes such as this one, the medicate that I referenced earlier. So, what this represents in this hall of shame is high price vitamin C’s. We don’t need them. If there is an affordable dupe out there, reach for it. Now, skin suiticles made a fortune off this trademark for the 10 years that it was present. Now, it’s fallen off. We, the consumer, can benefit with some much more affordable dupes. And I would love to see people invest in skin care that’s actually worth a higher price point. Expensive vitamin C’s like the skin suiticles one no longer are. Again, like I say, I’m not shading skin suiticles here. They really did revolutionize vitamin C, but they made their money while that patent was going strong and now it’s disappeared and we can benefit from some more affordable options. So yeah, expensive vitamin C’s not worth it unless you definitely definitely know that that formulation is offering you something extra. So there you have it guys, a whistle stop tour of the hall of fame and the hall of shame vitamin C’s. Hopefully, this has given you a little bit of guidance of what a good vitamin C serum looks like and what to avoid when it comes to choosing one for your own skincare routine. Let’s just prioritize transparency, affordability, and of course, making sure that the product isn’t deceptive in its coloration to try and hide other things. We We owe our skin better than that. And hopefully this has really helped. Let me know your thoughts down in the comments section below. Wherever you are in the world, guys, stay safe, stay well, and love your skin. Take care. Bye.
