Hi, I am Dr. Francisco Echevarria-Santiago. I am
a physician at Northside Decatur Primary Care, and today I will be explaining some vitamins important
for your health. Vitamins are chemically organic compounds that are essential in small amounts for
normal metabolism. Because most vitamins cannot be produced by humans, they need to be ingested in
the diet to maintain health and prevent disease. 1. Vitamin D for bone health. Vitamin
D decreases bone loss and may decrease fracture rate. There are several studies that
show a reduction in risk of falls following vitamin D supplementation. 2. Vitamin
B6 Vitamin B6 is found in bananas, nuts, and many common vegetables such as potatoes,
green beans, cauliflowers, and carrots. Vitamin B6 is thought to reduce the risk
of cardiovascular disease. 3. Vitamin B12 Low levels of vitamin B12 are most commonly
caused by poor absorption or inadequate intake of vitamin B12 containing food sources, such
as liver, milk, fish, and meat. Medications, such as metformin for diabetes, also
have decreased vitamin B12 absorption. In older adults, low stomach acid can cause
inefficient vitamin B12 absorption. Low vitamin B12 is associated with neuropsychiatric
