so today I want to talk about another supplement but this is one that’s been getting a ton of attention so if you’ve heard of Dr Barry tan he talks about tokat triol specifically gamma toot trol or Delta tokat trols he talks about a plant called an or a natto derived toat trols so I want to dig into this today because I haven’t met with Dr barit Tan yet I’d love to I’d love to have this conversation with him but I want to bring forth the research that supports his claims around these products and they’re totally but I want to talk about how we are incorporating this into our practice because this is new information this is new research on potentially a new form of vitamin E that maybe everybody should be taking but whenever something new comes along we have to sort of take it into context calm down decide whether or not it’s actually the Panacea that some people think it is and figure out how we want to use it in our bone health programs so stick with me as we go through what is Anto what is this new form of vitamin E what does the research really say and should we be changing our protocols based off of this new research or not yet so like I said Dr Barry tan has brought this to the Forefront and there is some very compelling research to discuss and I’m very excited when I see a researcher who is so passionate about a particular product so I do have a lot of questions though because when I looked at this I I’ll be honest I even thought anat was the same thing as natto um and they’re not and so I’m going to go through some of these things so we have to remember that vitamin E is kind of an unknown when it comes to the fat soluable Vitamins because there’s eight forms of them there are four forms of tokat trols four forms of tocopherols eight forms of vitamin E overall and when we look at the traditional products the older vitamin E products they’re all Alpha tofol and Alpha tofol is beneficial in some studies not in others but newer research is saying that the tokat trols are really where the value is so I want to get into some of these details but first let’s go through some basic groundwork here so vitamin A like I just said toat trols tools two different forms with four forms within each group now there’s a genetic variation with the alpha tofol so this is why some of the research shows that it’s good some of the research shows that it’s bad the tokat trol seem to be more well tolerated but we don’t have as big of studies yet but what we’re looking at in this the research on the toot trols is what is the impact of taking these in smaller groups on specific pathologies like osteoporosis for example now I mentioned before that uh compounds are coming from the plant anat anat is not the same thing as Nat and I made that mistake but anat is a natural food kind of coloring in sometimes a condiment that comes from the seeds of a tree that I’m not going to try to pronounce but it comes from Central and South America the seeds are known for their vibrant red color for their pigment it’s actually been used for Centuries by indigenous individuals for both culinary and medicinal purposes the early research showed that that the seeds and what was coming out of the seeds was both an antioxidant it was anti-inflammatory there were potential health benefits so again it’s been used for a long time but only recently have we been able to actually pull out this very specific form of the toat trols that is now being marketed and what we’re talking about today now natto is a fermented soy product and I thought that’s what we were talking about originally and I was like man I don’t know how they got vitamin E out of that but anyway it was a fermented soy product it is rich in k to that’s why a lot of people use it they like it for bone health I hear it doesn’t taste very good though but it is rich in isof bones and it is rich in nyise as well which is a a nice natural antique coagulant and so NATO has some benefits but natto is not what we’re talking about today so then why are these tokat trols so important why is all this new research being done well they appear to be very powerful antioxidants and they have really anti-inflammatory properties they were right centuries ago when they thought that these had some benefits it appears too that these are bone protective more so than the tfol now we pulled a lot of studies on these compounds it’s actually been studied quite a bit which is great because it gives us a sense of probably some safety data but I’m just going to go through the bone health studies to keep this relatively short so the first one is a study on this anat derived toat trol in estrogen deficient rats now we start with animal studies because that’s where usually the science starts and it can give us a sense of what’s going to happen in human studies but I have some human studies for you as well so in this 2021 study they didn’t actually use the same product that we’re going to talk about at the end but it was a similar product called self-emulsified anatot toat trol or seat is the acronym there it’s cool acronym they use this in an estrogen deficient rat model and essentially they develop postmenopausal osteoporosis what they saw is they saw improved osteoblast numbers in tracular mineralization they saw a decrease in so the other biomarkers and essentially showed that there was improved bone remodeling so it was helpful in preventing bone loss in this model but more importantly actually promoted bone formation so their summary was well this is a really potentially a potent option for combating osteoporosis so then fast forward to the human studies now the human studies are done on a different product so the product we’re going to talk about is a commercial product called Delta Gold now lots of companies use Delta gold as a vitamin E form of tokat trols Dr Barry tan has his own products with designs for health that company but other companies use this too so for example the products that I’ve recommended in the past health jevity and alal both use Delta Gold in different quantities in their fat soluable vitamin products Now Delta Gold is a very consistent ratio of both gamma and Delta toot trol so when you’re looking at supplements it’s nice to see when you see these uh these very specific products that you know that it’s going to be this very specific supplement it’s this probably obtained in the same way it should be very consistent so Delta Gold is just a product that a lot of companies will use all right now before I get into this study on postmenopausal women if you are struggling to put together your bone health program please consider joining our Master Class totally free opportunity to hear me walk through how we develop a program for people that are trying to improve their bone health naturally if you’ve already gone through the master class and you’re looking for more support please consider joining our healthspan nation Health span nation is our community of individuals who are looking to improve their bone health we have a weekly Zoom driven Q&A uh where people can ask questions and really help to drive the conversation within the community we have a vault of information as well as discount codes that we also deliver to our patients so Master Class Health span Nation great uh next steps after watching this video all right so back to this study so this study is a 2018 randomized control trial on 89 postmenopausal women for 12 weeks now that’s not a bad size for a supplement study I’d love for it to be bigger of course 12 weeks is pretty short though now they further subdivided these 89 women into three groups and they received a placebo which was olive oil arguably not really a placebo and then they used two different doses of Delta Gold they used Delta Gold 430 mg and Delta Gold 860 mg now this is a little confusing in the study cuz they actually said it a little bit differently and I and I’ll talk about the dosing at the end so I think this was a 70% Delta Gold silol of 430 Mig which comes out to about 300 milligram but anyway we’ll talk about that at the end the results of this study showed in these postmenopausal women that there were drops in bone alkaline phosphatase what does that mean bone alkaline phosphatase is similar to the P1 and P biomarker that we use for bone turnover and it is an indicator of bone growth so osteoblast function so a subtle drop in bone alos is not what we’re looking for but there was a significant decrease in ntx now ntx is similar to the biomarker I talk about a lot called CTX ntx is the urine version that’s kind of looking at the same thing now they also did some other biomarkers they look at serum rank liand serum Rank liand and osteop protegrin as a ratio and then this thing called urine 8 hydroxy D guanosine the 8 ohd G so when you put all these things together what did we see well there was a significant increase in the bone alkos over ntx ratio so that’s very much like what I talk about is the P1 and P over CTX ratio so what does that mean it means that you are building bone more when you see this ratio go up so it’s just another way to look at it now I think what’s also kind of cool is that they measured rank Lagan I’ve never seen the study do that before so rank Lagan you will hear this in the world of the drugs because rank Lagan is the target for one of the drugs it’s the target for Pia actually so what they showed in here is that rank Lagan levels in serum went down and that’s good so we want rank Lagan to go down lower is better it’s going to reduce the Osteo class function so then this rank Lagan over osteop protegrin that’s a kind of a fun New ratio I’ll have to explore that later now this 8 hydroxy 2 deoxy guanosine that’s the 8ohdg it’s a biomarker of oxidative stress it’s actually a cool biomarker we use it sometimes it’s not a blood biomarker it’s a urine biomarker so you can tell they were using hdg and ntx which are both urine biomarkers U but it’s cool because it’s a biomarker of oxidative stress and DNA damage in the body now the study says the tocotrienols effectively reduce oxidative stress and Bone resorption highlighting their potential in managing postmenopausal osteoporosis I think that that’s probably a good statement and looks like the Tok trols are definitely doing something in the right direction there is interestingly no difference between groups and I think this is really important because they did a lower dose and a higher dose group and they performed the same so we’ll talk about that when it comes to the products but that’s a really really important point to take away from here so then what are the potential benefits of this tocotrienol combination well they are likely to be antioxidant based off of these studies and other studies that I looked at that’s important because antioxidants are going to scavenge for the reactive oxygen species it’s going to protect osteoblast from oxidative damage it’s an important thing to protect your osteoblast these tokat trol seem to also be anti-inflammatory so they’re going to suppress the pro pro-inflammatory cyto kindes and Pathways that lead to accelerating bone loss with chronic inflammation they’re regulating bone remodeling in some way this is that rank Lagan osteop forager ratio so I need to do a little more research on that up again I’ve not seen that used before uh but it might be a cool new way to look at bone turnover so we see the togot trols recommended for use in cardiovascular health in through the Avenue of cholesterol reduction antioxidant protection by neutralizing free radicals and preventing lipid peroxidation these are recommended in cancer prevention and even cancer treatment by inhibiting cancer cell growth reduction in t angiogenesis they recommended in neuroprotection by supporting cognitive health and reducing the stroke risk they’re recommended in Liver Health they’re recommended in skin Health they’re recommended in healing woo the list goes on and on and on so what do we do how is this going to change what we do well right now we’re generally using for people that are going to use the alal plus product as that multim mineral with calcium we pair that with the alal D3 complete so I reached out to alal and they did confirm for me because I don’t see it on their website but they did confirm for me that the tokat trols that they have in their product does come from Delta Gold so it’s the same thing but in a different dose it’s at a 50 mgram dose and and then they have the alpha and Gamma Tofer alls and various dosages and that comes from a different product allog together now when you look at Dr Barry Tan’s site he links to the designs for Health Products this is the a Nat e product and that’s at a 300 milligram dose and 125 milligram dose now if you go back and look at that one study it was again a 70% purity of a 430 milligram product so I’m thinking that’s a 300 milligram dose if I’m doing the math right on that it didn’t actually clarify that so the question is are we going to change what we do based off of this research well remember this is just one study and it did have an impact on btms bone turnover markers but it wasn’t massive it wasn’t that impressive and it certainly wasn’t long enough to look at bone mineral density so while it’s promising I don’t know that it changes what we do and we’re already doing it so we’re already offering Delta Gold to our patients but at a lower dose but remember what I said the 300 Mig dose and the higher dose perform the same so where is the actual threshold we don’t know does a 50 migr dose do it maybe does a 10 milligram dose do it maybe is it somewhere in between I don’t know so more research needs to be done I don’t think that it’s worth it at this point to say that we should jump to that 300 milligram dose because this study used 300 milligrams this is a good starting point the other reason not to break apart the products that we have is that if you break apart the D3 complete you’re going to up with a product for a NATO e so you’re going to have this e then you’re going to have a D3 and K2 together and then you’re probably going to have a retinol together so you’re going to break apart one tiny little gel cap and you’re going to end up with three products probably with multiple capsules and so most people and osteoporosis Journey are really dealing with capsule fatigue they feel like they’re taking too many supplements they don’t want to take more than one so this would actually be breaking it into probably like six and so until there’s further Evidence I don’t think we’re going to make any changes now someone who wants to take it wants to take 300 Mig I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that it seems to have some incredible anti-inflammatory antioxidant properties but at this point I don’t think I’m quite ready to make that change now I will say this I would like to interview Dr Barry tan and apparently I just got his contact information so I’m going to reach out and so hopefully we’ll do an interview and we’ll see if he can convince me that I should be using 300 mg rather than 50 Mig so stay tuned for that so this was a video review of a nano derived toat Tron if you like this
