We often think about staying hydrated when we’re exercising outside in the heat, but it’s just as crucial in the winter months, too. Dr. Timothy Miller, orthopedic surgeon at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, explains the importance of hydration and vitamin D.

one other point you want to remember particularly uh because people forget about a lot during cold weather is hydrating properly so hydration even in cold weather is very important we know that in the summertime during hot weather when we’re sweating a lot more the hydration we all know about that but cold weather training certainly requires a lot of hydration and making sure you’re taking in the proper electrolytes as well one of the nutrients we commonly neglect particularly in the winter time that we really need for our bones is vitamin D vitamin D does a lot more than just strengthen bones it’s not a lot more than just something you see fortifying your milk it actually is to some extent a hormone which helps you store the calcium more efficiently into your bones and increase your bone density across the board and Northern latitudes we know that vitamin D levels are low throughout the winter time we don’t get a whole lot of sun exposure to our skin our skin actually helps us to produce vitamin D in our bodies and if we don’t have a whole lot of sun exposure from essentially from October to April like here in Ohio then our vitamin vitamin D levels are low and we’re predisposed to low bone density and also the risk of stress fractures
