As we approach the end of the year with the holidays, many of my patients are thinking about gifting ideas for friends and family. I know it can be hard to find skincare that is truly “affordable” but here we have relatively “budget” serums that can be a great intro to the world of skin brightening through this effective antioxidant called Vitamin C. Vitamin C serums can neutralize free radical damage from sunlight and pollution and can be a great way to reduce dark spots by applying it in the morning before sunscreen. Hope this video helps you in finding the vitamin c serum that works for you!

[Music] hey guys it’s Dr Daniel suy board certified dermatologist holidays are coming up and this video will hopefully give you some great inspiration for gift ideas for families and friends and we’re going to be going over the most affordable and effective vitamin C serums out there at your local drugstore we don’t have to break the bank on vitamin C serums although there are really nice ones if you want to spend more money for the holidays on you know some special friends or family you could go at a higher price point like Dermatology vitamin C plus F skin citical C fuic or their flutin CF skin better science Alto those are all waying close to $100 or even $200 so it depends on how much you want to spend but today will be only focusing on the products that you can find at your local drug store or retail store whether it’s Walgreens CVS Walmart Target also on Amazon very readily so why do we care about vitamin C serums vitamin C is a great antioxidant ingredient in your skin cartine I like to apply it in the morning you can do it morning and night but I like to reserve it just for the morning before applying sunscreen it can neutralize free radical damage or oxidative stress from sunlight and pollution we are exposed to that as soon as we step out of our doors going to work or going to work out I like to apply Vitamin C to my entire face and yes you can bring it down to your neck the deete area even the back of your hands to help brighten the skin it helps reduce dark spots it helps with hyperpigmentation if you deal with melasma it can help reduce those dark spots that happen on the cheeks that move towards the center of your face even affecting the upper lip and so vitamin C has been really nice to incorporate into my routine in my early 30s but I wish I started earlier you know I’d say late 20s is a good time to start vitamin C serums and yes you can apply it morning and night and technically you can layer it with retinol but it increases your risk of uh getting skin irritation so I’d say separate the two keep your retinol at night your vitamin C serum in the daytime and apply your your sunscreen it never replaces your sunscreen so always keep up your sunscreen even though it does protect you from free radical damage it’s also been shown in the studies that at 15% ascorbic acid or more you can start reversing sun damage or photo aging so it actually could help with collagen as well as those dark spots if you’re a teenager or your early 20s I say you don’t need Vitamin C in your routine keep it simple keep it affordable do a cleanser moisturizer and sunscreen if you’re a teenager or tween you don’t need all the other stuff you don’t need any serum when you’re a teenager I have patients who are teenagers coming in saying hey I got vitamin C because I heard it’s good for acne I have acne and I want to treat it no vitamin C serums do not treat acne guys you could see some with salicylic acid in it we’ll talk about a few in this video but the salicylic acid isn’t going to be great monotherapy for acne whether it’s konal whitee heads blackheads acne or inflammatory acne those painful red bumps or pules vitamin C serums will not treat them vitamin C can be broken up into ascorbic acid El ascorbic acid which is a very active form but very labile very sensitive to sunlight heat and pH and so it can break apart and become oxidized pretty readily whereas you can get a derivative of ascorbic acid which some say is even better tolerated for people with very sensitive skin it’s more stable it might penetrate further into the skin past the epidermis into the dermis and influence collagen more readily than El ascorbic acid so we’ll be talking about both let’s jump into El ascorbic acid or ascorbic acid if you’re unsure if you can tolerate a vitamin C serum or ascorbic acid start off with the introductory Serie skin renewing vitamin C serum this one when it first came out was like $21 $22 a few years ago and now it’s like close to $30 so cavey did Jack up the prices on their products I feel like there’s no such thing as affordable skincare anymore so I do say affordability in these videos is very Rel ative and unfortunately our hard-earned dollars are going towards pretty expensive products now at the drugstore but it’s still I’d say affordable in the grand scheme of vitamin C serum so if you are unsure if you can tolerate ascorbic acid this is 10% pure vitamin C or ascorbic acid you got panthenol which is a vitamin B5 and that has moisturizing and hydrating benefits as well as hyaluronic acid and the three essential camide this is a nice start but I feel like you got to use it in like 3 to four months because it oxidizes and ch changes color quite readily and that’s my critique for you know vitamin C is that you’re spending all this money on it you got to use it right so use it every morning once it starts changing color the efficacy might be dipping keep in a cool area you can even put in a skincare fridge if you want but just keep in a cool area away from the sunlight if you want to go up in percentage you could consider vishi has ascorbic acid vitamin E and this is a nice French brand that I’ve been using for a long time they used to have those glass vials those ampules that you would break off quite dangerous and so they got rid of those and now they have ones in a dropper bottle or even one in this like plastic tip applicator and I can’t find that product right now but I feel like that one has been giving me trouble it has been if I have it tilted to the side it does leak quite readily so be careful with that one and it looks like actually this one this is a brand new one this one’s their newest one 16% of scorc acid vitamin E honic acid and the dropper looks just like that so that’s my critique I didn’t really care for you know you got to squeeze is a plastic applicator to get the drops out it gets a little messy for me this is their newest one I’m looking forward to trying this out but this could be a nice potential call a gift idea here the the new lift active vitamin C Ser by vichi if you want something in between those two I have I I got I just bought a brand new bottle of the revital L’Oreal revital vitamin C serum this is 12% ascorbic acid plus vitamin E and you see salicylic acid so salicylic acid you can combine or layer with vitamin C and they can even formulate salicylic acid with the vitamin C serum so Loris POS makes a nice vitamin C serum with salicylic acid but this one by L’Oreal Paris the same thing I’d say this is a good one for those who are acne prone but if you have acne this will not treat acne so if you’re acne prone consider this one 12% ascorbic acid with salicylic acid if you’re in your mid to late 20s and you want to check out a vitamin C serum try this out if you’re in your 30s or 40s you want something stronger because the Studies have shown it can reverse photo aging which we definitely start seeing in our 30s consider vichi they’re 16 15 to 16% vitamin C or 12% vitamin C by L’Oreal now if you’re in your 40s of 50s and up you’re never too old to start vitamin C you can consider Timeless this is a newer brand that I don’t talk about on the channel at all but I’ve tried their 20% vitamin C Fric acid and vitamin E they work synergistically together those three ingredients and that’s why you see them in skin ptical C Fric or Dermatology C+ F those three work together and help reduce dark spots but the vitamin E and FRC acid help stabilize ize your ascorbic acid so a lot of people do like it in a airtight pump it’s very easy to dispense and instead of a dropper bottle and it has that familiar ascorbic acid SL culic smell check this one out it’s only like 26 bucks it’s very affordable and you get the 20% so there are a few studies out there that do show 20% ascorbic acid really can reverse photo aging now if we have say very sensitive skin and rosacea doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with vitamin C but just got to be careful you got to do trial and error and you might only be able to tolerate the derivatives if you want something in between with ascorbic acid plus derivative there’s notum their line is great but my favorite product in the line is the vitamin C complex serum and it’s stabilized by gold and glutathione so very stable and I just love the texture of this guy it just Blends in very nicely here it’s quite hydrating with hyaluronic acid and vitamin E this is a nice one so that’s one option and I love that dum hasn’t changed their prices in the last few years at Target still like $21 for this kudos to nutum for that if you’re wondering when do you apply this is cleanse in the morning apply your vitamin C serum and then moisturizer and sunscreen or your moisturizer with SPF if you want to throw hyaluronic acid in there I would put it after your vitamin C serum so it be cleanser vitamin C serum hyaluronic acid serum moisturizer with SPF vitamin C serum by Rock Reviving glow multi correction that one is an ethylated ascorbic acid so a vitamin C derivative that one’s very gentle uh it does have a scent that I love but some people don’t like fragrance but I think it’s a great hydrating uh serum that I I have used a lot for the last four years and it’s been great I’ve talked about it on the Today’s Show also when I went to Hawaii I was on the high now Daily Show I talked about that on live TV if you want to look into things without fragrance there’s two other vitamin C derivatives that you can consider one by vanic cream that I think is quite nice and then two Cetaphil came out with a new vitamin C serum um I’m glad they’re getting into the vitamin C game and the anti-aging game because they’re the one of the goats of of sensitive skin Cil has been around for a long time they put a lot of money into studies to show that their products are tolerated well various skin tone skin types which I give them a lot of credit for this one has athl vitamin C niacinamide which you guys know is a vitamin B3 analog that’s works that works great on many different aspects of our skin the Skin Barrier anti-inflammatory regulates seone production reduces dark spots and also has sunflower seed oil which is great I love it in their cedil moisturizing cream it’s a skin conditioner it’s a moisturizer it’s very moisturizing and nourishing so great to see those ingredients with their vitamin C serum and so awesome and gentle so doesn’t have ascorbic acid it’s they’re ethylated vitamin C like rock I mean there’s vitamin C like cleansers out there I don’t understand how that would really work I feel like it has to sit on your skin and take time to work on the epidermis whereas if you’re just washing it off I don’t know if that’s really doing much I like to have a leave on serum whether in a dropper or a pump hope this video was helpful guys just went over some things that you can easily find at your local stores you can call them drugstore Brands but you know there’s no such thing as medical grade skincare I know I’m going to get some comments saying oh these aren’t like medical grad this is a madeup term it’s not a real term you know there are brands that you can only purchase at a doctor’s office like say skin better science but now it’s available online so that world is changing very quickly so please hit the like button please subscribe the Channel please share with your friends who are looking into reducing dark spots or struggle with melasma share this video with them and um drop some comments Down Below on your favorite vitamin C serums and vitamin C serums that are good gift ideas okay guys so I’ll see you guys uh for the next video and have a good holiday season peace [Music]
