HILLSDALE CO., Mich. (WILX) -Checking in on one’s wellness can go a long way. Students in Hillsdale County are helping their classmates by providing wellness kits.
“I think it’ll help them a lot because sometimes a bag like that can really affect someone’s life and kind of change it,” said student Aniston Duff.
“We do see a lot of anxiety, depression, students of a wide variety from elementary up to high school, dealing with different emotions,” said Holly Clark, a student advisor. “So, anger, sometimes just tears all of a sudden because of overload on sensory.”
It’s from the students’ own experiences that they’re able to help others like them.
“I love the idea of the kits,” said student Brandy Neill. “I see a lot of kids putting them together. I see a lot of kids at my school receive a kit, and I know that it makes such an impact on their lives.”
Two students from every high school in Hillsdale County part of the Youth Advisory Council brainstormed the idea to create the kits this past summer.
“The students wanted to build these kits for their counselors,” said Mindy Eggleston, the program director of Hillsdale County Community Foundation. “There are counselors working in all of the public schools in our community. In some of the schools, there’s one or two counselors for the entire student body, and we just thought this would be a nice way to help.”
Through funds, the Youth Advisory Council was able to distribute 500 kits to counselors at the schools to pass out to students who need a boost.
