Republicans have been warning about a democratic party-created police state for years. However, it is Republicans who have been creating the extremely well-financed infrastructure for that police state over the past year.
It is now here. Claims of “absolute immunity” for police by Marco Rubio are an atomic missile directed at the rule of law.
First, the Republican-dominated Supreme Court gave the President immunity from prosecution for his official acts as President which was clearly impossible for an institution designed to enforce the law (not get around it). All lower courts should ignore this decision which far exceeds the authority of any court.
Now we have the next piece of the autocratic puzzle put in place as Rubio says police can do no wrong. He now insists federal police are immune from prosecution for any crime – rape, torture, extortion, murder, kidnapping, etc.
This is a dictator’s dream, and that dream is becoming a reality under the current lawless, anti-Constitutional Republican administration.
The feared Stasi in communist East Germany were “secret police” (masking makes our immigration police “secret”) who were among the most repressive in the world. They enjoyed such immunity, as do most police who work under dictators around the world.
This is the very thing the US Constitution was designed to avoid, and we now have high officials in our government using huge sums of taxpayer dollars to create police forces with no limits on their authority so they can send them as invaders into rival political areas.
All the while, federal agents are using extreme force to enforce the minor misdemeanor of being in the US without permission (entering illegally or overstaying one’s visa). Littering, speeding, and driving without a license are also misdemeanors which typically carry a small fine for the first offence.
But the undocumented and those considered “suspicious” are being treated as if they are on the FBI’s ten most wanted list, all for political rather than legal reasons.
Dictators and their representatives generally claim to have powers that go beyond any law or limitation. They seek to rule with an iron fist and want no individual to be beyond their power to arrest and even murder.
It is up to citizens and courts to limit their power and stop them as they stomp all over the rights of citizens to protest and resist usurping powers that are not theirs to begin with.
Rubio should be impeached immediately by Congress for violating his oath to protect and defend the US Constitution and the guaranteed rights of citizens.
People, both citizens and the undocumented, are being deprived of their liberty and even their lives every day without warrants or court orders, or any noticeable oversight of immigration police (so much for the constitutional guarantee of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”).
“Little Marco” is acting like a little Napoleon who should meet his Waterloo (final disastrous battle) as he endeavors to create a police state to threaten a free people. He seeks to use authoritarian force while making inane claims of absolute immunity of federal agents as they make an unnecessary and uninvited invasion of Democratic cities.
Let him go the way of the yes-men and vassals of petty dictators of the past. No one should mourn his loss, and his name and sad history should be immediately forgotten like a bad dream.
