No one should take iron supplements without a doctor’s recommendation – while too little iron causes anemia, too much iron is toxic and can increase the risk of cancer and heart disease. The body has no real mechanism to get rid of excess iron (except through blood loss.)
If you take a vitamin supplement, avoid those that contain iron unless your doctor has specifically recommended them, due to pregnancy, anemia, or some other health related reason based on blood tests. While meat and fish are a known source of iron, vegetarians can benefit from from pairing Vitamin C to improve the absorption of iron in the diet.

Iron is an important nutrient but it is unwise to supplement with high levels of iron unless you are deficient!

That is Smart Eating!
