Almost every year, one of the top New Year’s resolutions for many is to exercise more and eat healthier. But how do you make a resolution a habit that lasts all year? The key is finding balance in our diets and fitness routines.

In Florida, about 30% of adults live with obesity. These numbers highlight the importance of making small, sustainable changes that may lead to better overall health.

Here are some tips to consider:

Practice Mindful Eating

Instead of skipping your favorite dishes, focus on portion control. It’s important to fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables. Add lean protein and choose whole grains when possible for a balanced and satisfying meal.

Stay Active, Even in Small Ways
Busy schedules can make workouts tough, but small movements add up. The CDC recommends 150 minutes of moderate activity per week. Some ways to add more movement throughout your day can be to take a walk after meals, try a workout class or online workout, park farther from your destination or consider taking the stairs. Physical activity may help offset extra calories, boost your mood, and have long-term health benefits.

Plan Ahead

If you know a big meal is coming, balance it with lighter choices the rest of the day. Consider healthy swaps, such as roasted vegetables instead of creamy casseroles, or fruit-based desserts instead of heavy sweets. Keep healthy snacks on hand or bring a nutritious dish to gatherings to share. These options may help you stay on track.

Seek Support When You Need It
Also, remember that your health plan may offer programs or resources to help support you in your goals. Programs that focus on a whole-person approach may be more effective at treating all aspects of a person’s health and may lead to better long-term success and health outcomes.

By making mindful choices, staying active, and tapping into resources designed to help support you, you can make it easier to accomplish your well-being goals. Taking small steps today may lead to lasting benefits throughout the new year.
