PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) – Pharmacist Ahmed Elzeny says many customers are asking about supplements during flu season. He recommends zinc, vitamin C and honey as part of a flu-prevention routine, along with eating healthy foods and citrus fruits to help support the immune system year-round.

“So, the flu symptoms vary from one individual to another,” Elzeny said. “If we have a cough, yes, I would recommend DayQuil because it contains dextromethorphan, which is an antitussant medication. If it’s just for like a headache or a little bit of fever, we would recommend only Tylenol.”

Pharmacists also caution against taking too much pain reliever, noting that many cold and flu medicines already contain acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Elzeny said Tylenol is safer for the body but not as effective as ibuprofen, so he recommends alternating between the two when needed.

Elzeny said prevention remains the best defense and that the flu vaccine is still one of the most effective tools. Gulf Coast Pharmacy plans to begin offering flu vaccines soon.
