WASHINGTON (7News) — January is the busiest month for gyms and gym memberships — This is due in large part to New Year’s resolutions to get healthy and lose weight.
January gym memberships account for 12% of annual gym memberships, according to fitness websites.
In January, gyms become very crowded as people come in with great intentions to get healthy. However, by March, those numbers drop off by 30%, with a further 50% drop-off after six months.
“So, you know, I always say, if you’ve never been a member of a gym before and you’re thinking of joining one, just know this, that the entire fitness industry revolves around good intentions,” Kevin Brasler with checkbook.org said.
Brasler said, before you make a commitment, get some passes or a trial membership and make sure it’s a good fit for you.

“Go when you think you’re going to go. If it’s early morning or after work, go at those times. See how busy it is. And also take some classes if you’re interested in those you know, make sure you like the instructors and that they properly motivate you,” Brasler added.
And unless you’re there to use the machines or the weights, consider some options.
“A lot of people get more enjoyment out of, you know, joining a sports league or joining an exercise class or just working out at home. I mean, there are thousands and thousands of free videos out there where you can work out at home,” Brasler said.
Also consider government-run recreation centers. Some are even nicer than gyms, and usually cost a lot less. An average gym membership costs $40 to $70 a month. An average rec center will run you around $19 a month.
If you’re having trouble staying on track, get a workout buddy.
And remember, it takes time to make a change. So start small, be patient, and remember new habits grow slowly.
