EAST HUNTINGDON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — One person was shot in the parking lot of a Westmoreland County shopping center on Tuesday afternoon.
Police responded to the Crossroads Plaza right outside of the Planet Fitness in East Huntingdon Township.
One person fled from the scene but has since been taken into custody.
Trooper Steve Limani said the suspect initially took off before he was taken into custody in the Connellsville area and criminal charges are pending.
“It’s hard to believe that somebody would come and shoot another human being here outside of a very busy mall complex,” Trooper Limani said. ”It’s kind of disturbing.”
A nurse and bystanders who were health professionals saved the victim’s life by treating him on the scene quickly, state police told Channel 11.
“There was a medical professional – I believe a nurse – that was outside the Planet Fitness, and a couple of other people sprang into action and provided medical aid,” Trooper Limani added.
Crime scene investigators spent the afternoon interviewing witnesses, taking pictures of the scene and pulling surveillance video from the Planet Fitness and nearby businesses.
State police want to reassure people there is no danger to the public – this wasn’t random – the victim and suspect knew each other.
The suspect is not being named yet since charges are still pending.
He’s expecting to be arraigned later tonight.
