7 best collagen powders to support skin health and hair growthHow do collagen powders work?
One of the most common questions about collagen powders is how they actually achieve the big claims that they boast.
“Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, acting as the main structural component in our skin, hair, nails, joints, and connective tissue,” explains Anna Lahey, founder of Vida Glow. “It provides the skin with strength, elasticity, and firmness.”
She explains that from our mid-twenties, the body’s natural collagen production begins to decline. This is what contributes to visible signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, and a loss of hydration.
“Supplementing with hydrolysed collagen peptides helps to replenish what the body naturally loses with age,” she says. “Clinical studies have shown that oral collagen supplementation supports skin hydration, improves skin elasticity, and reduces the appearance of fine lines. It works from within to target the root cause of skin ageing, rather than simply treating symptoms at the surface.”
However, while many clinical studies and anecdotal evidence lean in favour of collagen powder supplements, it’s important to note that there are limitations, and not every brand is created equal. Experts have long questioned whether the body can absorb collagen effectively and use it in a meaningful way.
“Most collagen powders are made up of molecules that are simply too large to be absorbed, meaning they never reach the skin,” says Professor Mohammad Najlah. “Only targeted, clinically studied peptides, especially when protected with advanced delivery systems [like Elle Sera Liposomal Tripeptide Collagen] have been shown to help improve skin elasticity and hydration.”
Which is why Lorraine Perretta, head of nutrition at Advanced Nutrition Programme, recommends seeking collagen supplements that are boosted with other nutrients. “Collagen supplements vary in ingredient approach. Collagen alone may not yield the same benefits as a more holistic approach which could include: vitamin C to ‘twist’ collagen fibres to make them stronger, antioxidant nutrients to protect collagen, and phytonutrients like grape seed extract which reduce collagen degradation,” she tells Bazaar.
That said, remember that no supplement should ever be used in place of a balanced diet. If you have any questions or concerns, always consult a medical expert, licensed nutritionist or dietitian.
