Matthew Dixon, 21, started his business, Dixon Fitness Co, after struggling with drink and drugs as a teenager.

However, he used fitness and sport to rebuild discipline and improve his mental health.

He started off with mixed martial arts (MMA) and began training in that.

Speaking to the Press, Matthew said: “When I was an early teen, I got into the wrong crowds and stuff.

“I started drinking really young and doing other substances and things, but then I got into MMA as a kind of outlet for that.

“I got to that stage through training for multiple years. I competed nationally, taking a silver medal in the Four Nations tournament, and from there I decided I wanted to use that as the basis for a business.”

Matthew then completed a HND at Fife College and qualified as a personal trainer. He now helps people in Dunfermline lose weight and build healthy habits.

“The support and interest I’ve been getting from people is insane,” he admitted. “I’ve managed to help quite a lot of people, which I’m really proud of.

“I do sessions at the martial arts gym that I train at. It’s a private facility so it’s really good if someone’s anxious, or they don’t want a crowd there after their work.

“It’s nice and it’s one-on-one with the client.

“Usually, I work with people who are trying to lose weight. We do a lot of free weight exercises to build muscle, and that boosts their metabolism and helps them maintain weight loss,” he added.

He is also currently completing a pre- and post-natal course so that he can be certified in training women who are going through a pregnancy.

Going forward, Matthew says that he is doing partnerships with some businesses and wants to continue with that, and to continue supporting people to make realistic, long-term changes, rather than quick fixes to their health.
