Nourish Lompoc: Pasta Fagioli, a free community event, will blend nutritional education with hands-on learning, using locally sourced fresh produce, 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31 at Dick DeWees Community and Senior Center, 1120 W. Ocean Ave.
RSVPs are recommended but not required. Space will be on a first-come, first-served basis for those who do not register in advance.
Basic cooking skill demonstrations and nutrition information will be provide during the afternoon by Shelby Wild, Route One Farmers Market executive director.
Wild will use vegetables purchased by Route One from local farms, through funding from the Farms Together Program.
Guided by instructors, attendees will learn how to turn the surplus, seasonal produce into a tasty, healthy meal. Attendees must participate in the education class in order to take home freshly made soup at the conclusion of the event.
Route One will also have its mobile farmers market on site the day of the event, providing free vegetables and fruit to participants, while supplies last.
Patricia Bergstrom, Lompoc Valley Medical Center registered dietitian will assist at the event to answer nutritional questions. Bergstrom earned a bachelor’s degree in Foods, Nutrition and Wellness Studies from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
