The annual Alaska School Nutrition Association Conference wrapped up Thursday at the Dena’ina Center in Anchorage, after a week of workshops, tastings, and discussions aimed at improving school meals across the state.

The event brought together school nutrition professionals from Alaska and around the country to explore foods that meet USDA meal standards while keeping taste and student satisfaction in mind.

Organizers say the focus this year was on providing healthier options — meals made with whole grains, lean proteins, and lower sodium — without sacrificing flavor.

“We’re talking about the whole grains, lean proteins. Fruits and vegetables are a requirement now,” said Tanya Kelley with the Alaska School Nutrition Association. “Programs and manufacturers have taken all that into consideration, and we’ve been working together to develop foods that kids want.”

Many of the new products and recipes showcased during the conference could start appearing in school cafeterias as early as next school year, helping ensure that Alaska students enjoy nutritious — and delicious — meals every day.
