A leaf used in multiple “superfood” products is, instead, causing illnesses in people across the country, Food and Drug Administration Officials said.
MARYLAND, USA — An ongoing investigation into a nationwide salmonella outbreak has identified 20 new illnesses in seven new states.
The outbreak was caused by two “superfood” supplements sold by the Live It Up and Why Not Natural brands, according to the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention press release on Thursday. The outbreak has sickened at least 65 people in 28 states. Officials said 14 people have been hospitalized and no one has died due to the outbreak.
The FDA traced the outbreak to moringa leaf powder used in both Live It Up-brand Super Greens and Why Not Natural Pure Organic Moringa Green Superfood capsules, agency officials said on Thursday. The agency urged anyone who had purchased the super greens, with expiration dates from August 2026 to January 2028, or the superfood capsules with the expiration date of July 2028, to not consume them and throw them out.
“FDA is working with the firms to determine a root cause of the contamination and remove affected products from the market,” officials said in the press release. “FDA’s investigation is ongoing.”
