MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio — Planet Fitness is gearing up for the Feb. 4 opening of its latest workout facility at Golden Gate Shopping Center.

More than $2.7 million has been put it into the chain’s newest gym, which will include a host of features.

“We love the area,” said Senior Regional Manager Tony Silvas. “For years, we have been trying to get into Mayfield Heights.

“We feel the Planet Fitness’ ‘No Judgement’ philosophy and low-cost, high-value fitness facility fits perfectly in this market.”

There has been a Planet Fitness location for several years nearby at the former Richmond Town Square mall site in Richmond Heights — a property now in the process of converting to the mixed-use Belle Oaks Marketplace.

The Richmond Heights’ Planet Fitness, after Belle Oaks construction got under way, has moved across the street to Hilltop Plaza, at 5174 Wilson Mills Road.

Despite the close proximity to Golden Gate, on Mayfield Road just west of I-271, Silvas said, “We know these markets are close, but we really feel like both of these locations will serve this growing market wonderfully.”

The franchise owner for the Mayfield Heights location, Cambridge Fitness Holdings, is the owner of 10 others in the Cleveland Metro area. The Mayfield Heights club will be its eleventh. Cambridge also owns four locations in Lansing, Mich.

The new Planet Fitness measures 16,750 square feet on one floor and is located at 1594 Golden Gate Plaza. It will employ 20.

Its features will include:

Best-in-class strength equipment, including free weights, Olympic platforms, expansive strength machines, plate-loaded bench presses, and hack squatsMore than 50 state-of-the-art pieces of cardio equipmentFree fitness training included with all membershipsA functional training room, with turf, that can be used for agility trainingA dedicated HIIT (high-intensity interval training) area with air bikes and rowersA dedicated mobility and stretching spaceA Black Card Spa for PF Black Card members that will include HydroMassage Loungers, massage chairs, recovery loungers, and salon-grade hybrid tanning bedsFree WiFiAnd TVs with wireless connections to all cardio equipment

“Working with Mayfield Heights (city government) has been great,” Silvas said. “The Golden Gate Shopping Center has been upgraded over the last few years, and we are glad to join in.

“We’ve enjoyed working with the city.” The city has not provided incentives for the business.

Golden Gate Shopping Center is anchored by retailers such as Fresh Thyme Market, Marshalls, PetSmart, JoAnn Fabrics, and Bob’s Discount Furniture.

Open 24 hours per day, seven days per week, Planet Fitness is now offering deals for new members.

For a limited time, new members can join for $1 down, then $15 per month, or $1 down and $24.99 per month for a PF Black Card, with no commitment until opening day, Feb. 4.

New members can sign up online, or go to the club to get a membership started.

“This is a great location for us,” Silvas said. “Planet Fitness will serve the community around the idea that fitness should be welcoming and affordable.

“Anybody at any fitness level can get strong at Planet Fitness. The Judgement Free Zone isn’t just a slogan; it shows up in how we equip, design, train staff, and interact with our members every day.”
