WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE CO. (WOLF) — As the ball dropped in New York City to signify the new year, resolutions were made to start 2026 off on the right foot. For many, that resolution surrounded their health and wellbeing, leading them to subscribe to a gym membership.

For those at the Wilkes-Barre Township Planet Fitness like club manager Katie Yablonsky, popular goals this year focused on functional training, improving daily life both inside and outside the gym.

“You use muscles when you’re walking, when you’re sitting. Just to sit up straight, to wash your hands or open a car door, you’re using your muscles,” she said.

Yablonsky says strength training can be done by people of any age, as long as they start small.

“After a while, if doing any sort of strength training, any sort of stretching, any sort of exercise, things do become easier. Those muscles are now more used to those movements and they’re stronger,”

The gym can also provide a social environment for beginners and experts, according to Yablonsky.
