Personalized beauty is the true foundation of the new M.Y.R. Makeup & Skincare boutique in Huntington.

Open since January, the beauty destination for cosmetics and thoughtful consultations marks a fresh chapter for makeup artist and entrepreneur Mallory Y. Rutledge, whose experience spans nearly 30 years in New York City.

“I’ve always loved beauty,” says Rutledge, who grew up in Brooklyn and still thrills at vivid childhood memories of watching her mom put on her red lipstick. “I’ve also always loved the aspect of empowering women.”

A way to do that is by listening closely and paying attention. That essential fact is a key building block of the M.Y.R. brand. “My philosophy is that beauty is a one-on-one experience,” says Rutledge. “When it’s done correctly, there’s no rushing.”

Expect that approach at the 217 Wall St. storefront — Rutledge’s Long Island debut — a warm and shiny retail space with private rooms for small group gatherings like bridal parties. A similar vibe was integral at her now-closed businesses in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

“I have an eight-minute commute now to work,” says Rutledge, who has lived with her husband for five years in Huntington Bay. Framed pictures in the store capture career moments.

Rutledge graduated from New York School of Design, where studies in color theory inform her work in the beauty industry. She began her career with Christian Dior Cosmetics and she later worked backstage at major fashion shows, including Yves Saint Laurent, Galliano and Ferré.

In 1997, Rutledge founded M.Y.R. Inc. She developed a line of custom-blended cosmetics designed to enhance but not mask. Products are natural and fragrance-free and cater to sensitive skin.

Popular M.Y.R. products include custom-blended foundation for various skin shades ($55), lipsticks and glosses ($28-$32), and concealers and enhancers ($28-$50). There’s an array of cleansers, toners, and moisturizers for skin care.

The Huntington location carries vintage jewelry, a curated seasonal selection of fragrances and Ficcare hair clips.

“I just want people to come in and understand that I’m here to help them understand what’s right for them,” says Rutledge. “I try to make makeup fun.”
