One of the country’s top dietitians has warned the mass popularity of weight-loss drugs in Australia could lead to malnutrition – and in extreme cases scurvy – as a new study reveals global trials of appetite-suppressing medicines rarely measure whether patients are eating properly.

Clare Collins, a professor in nutrition and dietetics at the Newcastle School of Health Sciences, said the results of a systematic review being published on Tuesday highlighted a critical blind spot into what is known about the side effects of the class of medicines called GLP-1s.
