A nutritional supplement sold by Ambrosia Brands that is supposed to make users feel better can actually make them sick.
Certain lots of Rosabella moringa capsules that were sold to consumers nationwide have been recalled because they have been linked to an outbreak of salmonella, according to an announcement with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this outbreak is not related to a previous outbreak of salmonella linked to moringa leaf in dietary supplements. As of Jan. 29, that outbreak includes 65 cases and 14 hospitalizations in 28 states.
The Rosabella capsules were sold at tryrosabella.com and TikTok shop for about a year.
The company said it is also aware that there may be unauthorized third-party sellers through eBay.com, Shein or other sites. None of the impacted lots were sold by the company or authorized resellers on Amazon.com. However, consumers who bought it there should also check the lot numbers.
Consumers can see all of the lot numbers in the FDA announcement here.
The recalled capsules were sold in 60-count bottles with expiration dates ranging from March 2027 to November 2027.
To date, there have been seven illnesses resulting in three hospitalizations across the United States due to salmonella contamination. Three cases have been linked to a single product. The FDA and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reported that the outbreak may be linked to Rosabella moringa capsules.
“We continue to diligently investigate, in collaboration with FDA, this possible link of the salmonella outbreak to Rosabella Moringa Capsules. We have discontinued use and purchase of all raw moringa leaf powder from the raw material supplier of the above referenced lots,” Ambrosia Brands said.
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.
Symptoms may include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
In rare circumstances, the FDA said, an infection can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses.
Customers who purchased the recalled product should discontinue using it and dispose of it.
