CHICO, Calif. – In this week’s Wellness Wednesday, Action News Now delved into the world of anti-aging face creams to uncover ingredients that can truly alter your skin’s physiology.
Dr. Nerissa Prieto, a board-certified anesthesiologist and founder of Privvy Modern Health, shared insights into how certain ingredients can improve skin health.
“Your skin is your largest organ, it is a manifestation of your health overall. If your diet is good, you’re not afflicted with chronic disease, I would expect that your skin would glow,” said Prieto.
Prieto recommended focusing on the A-B-C and G’s of skincare for aging. “A is a vitamin A, a clinical grade retinol,” which stimulates higher skin turnover, she said.
B stands for Broad-spectrum sunscreen, which she said is crucial for protection against UV-induced damage and skin cancer.
“Vitamin C allows you to continue to make more collagen and can help your skin respond without using hyperpigmentation,” Prieto said.
Growth factors, represented by G, are “little tiny molecules that cells in your skin use to communicate with each other to keep going, make more collagen and elastin.,” she said.
These growth factors can be derived from stem cells or peptides, and applying them topically in a professional-grade product can significantly improve skin texture, Prieto explained.
She also advised that cleansers and moisturizers should be chosen based on individual skin types.
Some of these anti-aging products are available over the counter, while others may require a prescription. Dr. Prieto recommends consulting with a dermatologist to determine the best products and strengths for your skin type.
