HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – Dozens of people attended a free health seminar Saturday morning, designed for folks 65 and older.

A “Senior Wellness Day” was sponsored by Southeast Mississippi Rural Health Initiative and took place at the Hattiesburg Family Health Center.

The event is held once each month.

“I enjoy the fellowship, I enjoy the information that we learn here and I am a diabetic, I have high cholesterol, so every month I come, I learn something different,” said Brenda Booth, one of about 50 people who attended.

About 90% of the attendees were women.

Saturday’s event focused on heart health.

Attendees received health screenings and gained valuable insights into heart health from Hattiesburg Clinic acute care nurse practitioner Billy Chancellor.

“I think it’s very encouraging that these ladies took advantage of free screening, and I think that is a key, because the earlier we can screen our population, then hopefully, we can reduce the overall mortality that’s associated with cardiovascular events,” Chancellor said.

The next “Senior Wellness Day” will be held on March 21.

The focus that day will be on kidney health and colorectal cancer awareness.
