HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) – The Office of the Inspector General has released a preliminary report, including bodycam video, of a mental health wellness check that ended in the deadly shooting of 53-year-old Everard Walker.

The shooting occurred last week. According to the report, a family member called 211 seeking assistance because Walker was suffering from an acute mental health crisis.

Several Hartford police officers accompanied two mental health professionals from the Capitol Region Mental Health Center to respond to Walker’s apartment on Capitol Avenue.

The team arrived at Walker’s apartment at around 10:08 a.m. They attempted to speak to Walker from the hallway through the open door of the apartment, according to the report.

Walker’s son and daughter were home at the time. His fiancé also arrived while the professionals attempted to speak to Walker to see if he was a danger to himself or others.

“Several police officers subsequently entered the apartment but retreated when they became concerned that Walker might throw a pot of boiling water at them. Additional discussions between officers and the various parties continued.” the report says.

At around 11 a.m., officers made another attempt to enter Walker’s apartment when Walker attempted to close the apartment door and was being physically restrained by his son.

The report says a physical altercation broke out between police officers, Walker and his two children.

That is when Walker pulled a knife from his waistband and attempted to stab Officer Rivera, who had fallen backwards, the report says.
