Parliament votes to lift immunity of ND lawmaker

Parliament voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to lift the immunity of New Democracy lawmaker Dimitris Markopoulos following a complaint filed by Stefanos Kasselakis, leader of the Movement for Democracy party.

The motion to remove Markopoulos’ parliamentary immunity had been requested by both the relevant parliamentary committee and by Markopoulos himself.

In a vote of the full chamber, 234 of 246 members present supported the measure, while 12 voted against it.

Kasselakis’ complaint concerns alleged acts of defamation and insult. The case centers on statements Markopoulos made in a July 2025 interview on public broadcaster ERT, in which he described Kasselakis as a “businessman president” involved in “gray areas and shady dealings.”

The lifting of immunity clears the way for legal proceedings against Markopoulos.
