The Atlanta VA Health Care System teamed up with the PGA TOUR Superstore to host a special golf simulation event for Veterans on February 23 at the Atlanta VAHCS Joseph Maxwell Cleland Atlanta VA Medical Center.

The interactive event blended recreation, rehabilitation, and community connection, offering Veterans a fun, low-impact way to stay active while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow Veterans and supporters.

Using state-of-the-art golf simulators provided by PGA TOUR Superstore, Veterans of all experience levels were able to step up to the tee, practice their swing, and enjoy virtual rounds on iconic courses. The event also highlighted how adaptive and recreational activities can support both physical and mental well-being.

“This was such a great experience,” said Navy Veteran Traci Williams. “Golf has always been something I enjoy but being able to do this right here at the VA, surrounded by people who understand our journey, made it even more meaningful. It reminded me how important it is to stay active and connected.”

Gwen Ramos, Atlanta VAHCS Chief of the Center for Development and Civic Engagement (CDCE), emphasized the value of partnerships like this one. “Events like today show what’s possible when community partners come together in support of Veterans,” Ramos said. “PGA TOUR Superstore’s generosity and enthusiasm helped create an environment where Veterans could relax, have fun, and focus on their overall well-being.”

Representing PGA TOUR Superstore, Ross Shackelford shared the company’s appreciation for the opportunity to give back. “It’s an honor to work with the Atlanta VA and spend time with these Veterans,” Shackelford said. “Golf has a unique way of bringing people together, and if we can help create moments of joy and connection like this, that’s a win for all of us.”

Shackelford noted how golf is renowned not only for its ability to provide a relaxing and enjoyable pastime but also for its significant health benefits. “Engaging in regular golf sessions can enhance cardiovascular health, improve muscle tone and endurance, and aid in weight management due to the walking involved.”

Moreover, golf and other sporting activities foster mental well-being by promoting focus, reducing stress, and encouraging social interaction. Such holistic advantages make golf an ideal activity for those seeking to maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle.

The February 23 golf simulation event is one of many collaborative efforts by Atlanta VAHCS to engage Veterans through innovative programs and strong community partnerships—reinforcing its ongoing commitment to whole health and Veteran-centered care.
