(InvestigateTV) — This Week on InvestigateTV+ Weekend: For generations, beauty standards pushed black women toward chemical hair straighteners.
Now, researchers say the health impacts are harder to ignore. And it’s not just the clients who experience it. Stylists say they’ve been breathing these chemicals in – shift after shift – with little to no warning.
WHERE TO WATCH ICYMI – Watch last week’s episode.
Cost of Beauty: Hair relaxers and treatments commonly used in salons and even available in stores contain formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing chemicals. When heated, those chemicals can be toxic and cause both short and long-term health effects. These formaldehyde-containing products are commonly used in the Black community and have been for decades. The chemical is also in other products – particularly those designed for curly hair and for some Brazilian Blowout treatments. National Consumer Investigative Reporter Caresse Jackman digs into years of complaints to the FDA and OSHA from both customers and hair stylists who’ve had adverse reactions ranging from burns to cancer that they attribute to these hair care products and processes. Plus – she looks into a call to ban formaldehyde in beauty products.
Med Spa Meta Mistake: Imagine your business’ social media pages getting shut down overnight — after being flagged for something as serious as child sexual exploitation — and you’re told it’s permanent, with virtually no way to appeal. It’s happened to small businesses across the country. Susan Campbell looked into one case and found how fast a business can disappear online and what it can take to get it restored.
Watching Your Wallet – Ignoring Debt: If you’re starting to struggle with paying bills, especially credit cards, experts say the worst thing you can do is ignore the debt. In this Watching Your Wallet, Consumer Investigator Rachel DePompa explains what can happen when balances are left to linger and what steps you can take to get back on track.
