MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and the Cancer Wellness Foundation’s “Women in Blue” campaign is underway.
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men and women, according to the Cancer Wellness Foundation. This year, it’s expected to cause nearly 53,000 deaths, according to the American Cancer Society.
However, through screening, it is one of the most preventable and treatable diseases. It’s recommended everyone over 45 be screened, but if you have a family history of the disease, you may need to be screened earlier. There are currently more than one million cancer survivors in the united states.
20 women in the area are committed to wearing the color blue every day of the month, and to raise money for cancer patients in the River Region. WSFA 12 News Sales Director Ashley Stewart is one of those women this year. Click here to donate to support her campaign.
