You know that glow you get after a gorgeous evening with your girlfriends? When you feel like you’ve practically bathed in oestrogen? Now take that feeling and add the sensation of flying down a mountain, powder glittering in the sunlight around you, with nothing on your to-do list except cosy après in Chamonix or submerging ski-weary muscles into a steaming thermal pool.
No emails. No life admin. No mental load humming in the background. Just fresh Alpine air and the simple decision of whether to order hot chocolate or something stronger at lunch.
Pretty glorious, right? That’s the reality of a Girl Powder retreat.

For five days, I joined this women-only winter escape in Chamonix — and it completely changed the way I think about ski holidays. Yes, there was high-octane skiing. But there was just as much emphasis on slowing down, tuning in and doing things entirely at your own pace. Ski all day if you like, or take an afternoon in the spa instead. Skip skiing altogether and snowshoe through silent forests. Every option felt equally valid.
And doing it all alongside a group of inspiring, generous, warm women? It felt like being washed in feminine energy — the kind you didn’t realise you were craving until you’re enveloped in it.
So, what’s the skiing actually like?
Whether you’re confident carving reds or still mastering the snow plough, the skiing here truly caters to everyone.
During the trip, we explored Le Tour, Brévent and Flégère — each offering a mix of runs, breathtaking vistas and plenty of mountain restaurants perfect for a mid-ski vin chaud or long, lazy lunch. January blessed us with fresh snow and bluebird days, meaning the mountains sparkled in the sunshine and every descent felt like a small victory.

I’ve only skied twice before. I’m fairly confident, but I still need reassurance — someone beside me who keeps things light, encouraging and fun. Enter Joe, my instructor. After a quick initial ski, the group was split by level, but there was no ego attached. You could step up or ease back depending on how you felt that morning.
The instructors were some of the kindest and most patient I’ve ever experienced — never patronising, always gently encouraging. And then there was the magic ingredient: the women around you. Cheering you down the mountain, whooping when you nail a turn and waiting at the bottom with open arms and wide smiles. Skiers’ high is real, but add collective female support and it’s something else entirely.

On a clear day, the expanse of the Chamonix valley reveals itself in jaw-dropping fashion. Snow sparkles, Mont Blanc looms magnificently in the distance and the air feels so crisp it almost hums. Whether you’re perched on a wooden balcony nursing a cold pint at Bergerie de Planpraz (2,000 metres up and worth the ski in) or cruising down gentle blues at Le Tour, it’s hard not to feel completely, wonderfully alive.
And if I don’t want to ski all day?
Each morning begins with breakfast and skiing, but what happens after lunch is entirely up to you: continue exploring the slopes or head back to the chalet for restorative bliss. Fear not; the wellness side is not an afterthought, it’s given equal weight.
How does the R&R stack up?
Afternoons bring therapeutic yoga with the gorgeous Sema, held in the chalet beside vast windows overlooking the mountains. Think deep hip openers for sore snow-ploughers, essential oils drifting through the air and long stretches to ease ski-weary limbs.

Then there’s the chalet’s enormous Swim Spa — essentially a giant outdoor hot tub with space to swim — where we sipped champagne as the mountain air nipped at our cheeks. The sauna and relaxation area downstairs became a nightly ritual, easing tight calves and tired quads.

A massage with Sema is optional and booked separately — but I implore you not to miss it. She’s a true healer and reads your body rather than following a set routine, intuitively easing ski-born tension and pinpointing exactly where you hold stress. It was transformative; she told me things about my body that made perfect sense once said aloud.
And if you can tear yourself away from the chalet, QC Terme Chamonix is unmissable. A short, scenic walk along the river leads you to panoramic thermal infinity pools with Mont Blanc views. Heated outdoor baths overlook snow-carpeted lawns that melt into towering peaks. There are multiple saunas (including one themed around local history), steam rooms, sensory tubs and relaxation spaces — plus an evening cocktail and buffet lunch included in your entry. Ski-weary muscles will thank you.

What else is on offer?
For something gentler than downhill skiing, snowshoeing in Le Tour takes you through eerily quiet, untouched powder — a true winter wonderland moment.

Or hop on the charming cogwheel Montenvers train from Chamonix up to 1,913 metres for sweeping views of the Mer de Glace glacier, Les Drus and the Grandes Jorasses. A gondola then carries you down to the Ice Cave, carved directly into the glacier each year for a surreal, magical experience inside the mountain itself.
And then there’s Chamonix town: permanently twinkly, almost Christmassy year-round. Wander along the river, browse the designer boutiques, stock up on French pharmacy favourites and sample cheeses from local delis. It’s charming in the most quintessential way.

What’s the food situation?
Before you even arrive, you’re sent a preference form detailing favourite foods and drinks — a small touch that sets the tone for how thoughtful this retreat is.
At the chalet, Chef Luca delivers restaurant-level dining every night. Pre-dinner drinks are accompanied by canapés and boards so beautiful they could double as centrepieces.

Dishes across the week included winter burrata with Japanese pumpkin, velvety butternut squash and coconut soup, baked sea bass with black rice and cherry tomato cream, rib-eye steak with romanesco and chimichurri, and orange almond cake with mascarpone. And one evening we devoured traditional Raclette — molten cheese scraped generously over boiled potatoes with a sharp side of pickles — cooked together at the table. Breakfast spreads are equally abundant: pastries, granolas, eggs, smoked salmon, avocado, porridge, fresh juices — whatever your morning ritual requires.

Lunches out were just as memorable: a frosty pint and burger at Le Kitsch Inn in Les Houches; the best French onion soup I’ve ever tasted at Rose Du Pont (in the prettiest pink building in town); and hearty mountain fare at Bergerie de Planpraz, perched high above the valley.

There’s always something to nibble back at the chalet too, with drinks always flowing and freshly baked afternoon treats daily, including vegan and gluten-free options.
Where am I staying?
Chalet Mélèzes is modern luxury with a nod to Alpine tradition. A roaring fire greets you each evening, a wide wooden porch wraps around the property, and outside you’re met with the swim spa and mountain air. Downstairs is a spacious sauna, relaxation area, walk-in shower and a well-stocked gym complete with Peloton and free weights.

There’s a ski and boot room with heated warmers, an underground garage, a drinks room and eight beautifully designed ensuite bedrooms complete with robes, slippers and thoughtful toiletries.
It’s the kind of place where tea and coffee appear at your bedroom door each morning — and where you can help yourself to snacks and drinks whenever you please.

The verdict
This isn’t just a ski trip, it’s a reminder of how powerful female community can be. The whole experience feels like enveloping yourself in feminine energy — like sinking into a warm bath after an exhaustingly brilliant day on the mountain, wine in hand, cheeks flushed from cold air and laughter.
And then there are the little touches that make your time truly magical — from handwritten notes at the end of the week (each woman goes home with an envelope of affirmations written by the others — I pull mine out whenever I need a boost) to the way everyone cheers you down the mountain, celebrating every small win as if it were their own.
Come with someone you love or arrive solo — you won’t be roomed with strangers — and chances are you’ll leave with a ready-made new crew. My group is already planning round two!
Book it. It’s good for your skiing, but it’s even better for your soul.
