First Responders

UTICA, N.Y. — Oneida County will launch a new wellness program for first responders and uniformed personnel with the help of a $60,000 grant.

The funding comes from the New York State Office of Mental Health, according to County Executive Anthony Picente.

The CARES UP model will focus on emotional, intellectual, financial, environmental, physical and social wellness for those serving and protecting Oneida County.

The County will create a Peer Support and Wellness Team with members from the Oneida County 911 Center and other local agencies to offer peer support, training and wellness programs.

CARES UP, developed by the State Office of Mental Health, stands for Changing the Conversation, Awareness, Resilience, Empowering Peers, Skills Building/Suicide Prevention for Uniformed Personnel.

The program is designed to reduce stress and burnout, improve morale, offer confidential peer support and provide practical tools to help manage challenges faced by first responders.
