The Harkin Institute for Public Policy and Citizen Engagement announced that its 2026 Harkin on Wellness Symposium will be held March 11 at the Olmsted Center on Drake University’s campus, focused on the treatment and prevention of cancer. The event comes as Iowa reports its third consecutive year with the nation’s second-highest cancer rate. The event will cover factors shaping cancer care, from environmental hazards to clinical and lifestyle interventions. Keynote speakers include Dr. Ricardo Salvador of the HEAL Food Alliance and Dr. Jesse Bell of the University of Nebraska Medical Center, who will discuss issues such as nutrition and nitrate pollution in drinking water. The symposium will also feature panels with journalists from the Washington Post and the Guardian on environmental health and the role of media in public health and preview new research from the institute and the Iowa Environmental Council on cancer and water quality.
