Laurens County School District 55 (LCSD 55) recently announced it has been awarded a $7,000 Fresh Fruit and Vegetable grant sponsored by the South Carolina Department of Agriculture. This funding will enhance the district’s Student Nutrition Program.
Access to fresh, nutritious foods is a key component of maintaining a healthy school climate that empowers students to perform at their best each day.
The grant will allow the district to incorporate a variety of South Carolina-grown fruits and vegetables into school offerings this spring, while also strengthening partnerships with local farmers and produce companies throughout the state.
“I am so thrilled to have this funding to support our students and allow them to enjoy locally-grown fruits and vegetables,” Wanda Knight, LCSD 55 director of student nutrition services said. “We plan to utilize this funding in the spring by purchasing some South Carolina-grown fruits and vegetables, such as cabbage, lettuce, broccoli, cucumbers, squash, zucchini and strawberries.”
By increasing access to fresh produce, LCSD 55 continues to prioritize student wellness while reinforcing the importance of healthy choices and agricultural awareness. Supporting local agriculture not only benefits students but also strengthens the broader Laurens County and South Carolina communities.
