MARSHALL COUNTY, Ind. (WSBT) — A new uplifting event is coming to the Marshall County Blueberry Festival this year.
Blueberry Beast, a powerlifting competition for both men and women, is partnering with a nonprofit to help take the weight off the shoulders of families who need it most.
It’s going to be bench, deadlift, and squats. So it’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Event Coordinator and Fire Buddies Member Adam Baer.
The Marshall County Blueberry Festival attracts hundreds of thousands of people each year.

The Blueberry Beast powerlifting competition is organized by Plymouth fitness center FitStop24.
But the competition is not just about proving your strength — proceeds will benefit the charity “Project Fire Buddies.”
We basically walk alongside families and children under 18 who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness. We bring a lot of presents. We get off the fire truck and we just bombard them with gifts, not only for the child that is sick, but also for the brothers and sisters,” said Baer.

In its inaugural year, organizers are looking for around 200 people to sign up for the competition.
The registration fee right now has a little bit of a discount because we’re sponsoring it, so if you’re a FitStop member, it is $80. Anyone else who wants to register that’s not a member, it will be $100,” said FitStop24 Co-Owner Makla Sanchez.
Those proceeds help Fire Buddies bring positivity into the child’s life — which is an experience personal to Baer.

When you’re a part of a relationship like that, you remember that the rest of your life, and there’s a lot of takeaways that make us better people as we walk alongside them,” said Baer.
The powerlifting competition will be held September 4th through the 6th at the Marshall County Blueberry Festival.
