If you’ve ever been at the airport and been desperate for the time to pass quicker, you’re in luck if you’re in Sydney. Anytime Fitness has opened Australia’s first-ever airport gym at the international terminal today.

It means you’ll be able to get a pump in before your flight, which could do wonders for those who have long layovers. Personal trainer and Sydney Airport club manager Daniel Harrison told Yahoo Lifestyle it’s incredible that the gym doors are finally open.

“It’s been a massive journey from Anytime Fitness head office, us as the franchisees, the staff, and the airport,” he said.

“It’s probably been over a year now from when we actually started to go through the planning process.

“But in terms of the concept for this, this has been in the works for years now, so we’re super happy that we finally managed to get this one across the line.”

Sydney Airport has around 40 million people pass through its doors every year and boasts an incredible 30,000 staff.

The gym will be open for travellers, airline crew and airport staff.

“The terminal closes here at about 11:30pm to midnight, but we do have two entrances, and one is available, 24/7,” Daniel said.

“So you could be staying at the hotel across the road and pop down at 3am just before you fly.

“You can have a nice workout so you’re tired for your flight, and then you get a good sleep by the time you land.”

Where is the gym at Sydney Airport and how does it work?

It’s located on the airport’s landside, meaning before you go through security and passport checks.

The entrance to the Anytime Fitness facility is on the ground floor at T1 where arrivals is found.

The 300-square metre gym is spread out over two levels and will feature everything you’d expect at an exercise studio.

There is a free weights section, bench press and squat racks, as well as plenty of cardio equipment and areas to stretch.

And no gym would be complete without “premium showers and amenities”.

Daniel urged people to make good use of those facilities as no one wants to sit next to someone who’s sweaty on a long-haul flight.

“That would definitely be the recommendation.

“We make sure everybody’s got a towel, but if they could also make sure they’re nice and freshened up out of courtesy for everybody they’re flying with, that would represent Anytime Fitness really well,” he said.

Anytime Fitness members will be able to scan their passes to access the gym and its facilities for no extra cost, however non-members will have to pay for entry.

The starting fee for a day pass is around $35.

Is it a concern to work out close to a flight?

Daniel warned people to be careful with their bodies if they’re going on a long-haul flight as you don’t have much room to stretch once you’re in the air.

Anytime Fitness created three different workouts you can do:

Pre-flight routine: six simple exercises designed to boost circulation and prepare the body for long periods of sitting without causing fatigue, including Goblet Squats and Romanian Deadlifts.

Mid-Flight Menu: a selection of easy, seat-based movements targeting the neck, shoulders, spine, hips and legs, offering quick ways to help you stay comfortable, improve circulation and feel refreshed during your flight.

Post-flight routine: six restorative exercises to improve mobility, activate key muscle groups and help reset the body after landing, including hip rotations, leg and dumbbell press.
