53 million people projected to face acute food and nutrition insecurity (phase 3 or worse) during the 2026 lean season
Worsening acute malnutrition, with marked increases expected in Niger, Chad, Mauritania and northeast Nigeria between May and October 2026
7 areas projected in phase 4 (emergency), mainly in Nigeria and Mali
Chad (16.5%) and Nigeria (15.9%) with the highest proportions of population in phase 3 (crisis) or worse
Persistent epicentres (Lake Chad basin and central Sahel) with extension toward coastal countries (Ghana, Mauritania, Senegal and Sierra Leone)
