VICTORIA, Texas – The Victoria County Public Health Department is promoting physical activity for local residents after a grand opening for a new outdoor fitness area at the Houston House apartment complex.
The free fitness area was created through grants provided by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services’ Healthy Communities Program.
The program evaluates eight factors that impact chronic diseases and assigns overall scores for the level of recognition and awareness in communities.
The Healthy Communities Program is an initiative to target needs specific to each community.
Victoria County Public Health officials say that accessibility is one of the biggest barriers to public physical health. Transportation, equipment availability, and operating hours are elements of accessibility residents have struggled with in regard to physical activity.
The county hopes the free outdoor workout area will promote physical activity and open the pathway for similar projects in the future.
