Crunch Fitness has submitted a building permit to take over the property that previously housed Gordmans on South Campbell Avenue in Springfield.
New York-based Crunch Fitness submitted the building project plans in December 2025 to the city of Springfield and the plans are under review, according to the building project permit filed with the city. A building permit was submitted March 4, 2026.
The plans include drastic renovations to the property, located at 3303 S. Campbell Ave., that formerly housed Gordmans and RadioShack, next to Walmart Supercenter. Crunch plans to renovate the building with locker rooms, bathrooms, showers, and tanning and HydroMassage equipment, according to the filed plans. The renovations will require updates to the electrical and plumbing systems.
Crunch Fitness will lease just over 43,000 square feet in the existing building, according to the plans submitted. The rest of the building will be demolished, specifically the west portion of the property. New facades will be installed on the east and west sides of the building.

The fitness franchise includes top-of-the-line strength and cardio equipment, fitness classes and amenities like HydroMassage beds and tanning booths.
There are more than 400 Crunch locations across the country, according to the company website. In Missouri, there are mulitple Crunch franchises in the St. Louis and Kansas City regions, as well as a store in Columbia.
Crunch Fitness did not respond to an email or phone call seeking comment on the planned Springfield franchise.
The property at 3303 S. Campbell Ave. is owned by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. 8721, according to Greene County Assessor’s Office records. The property includes the adjacent building that houses Walmart Supercenter, with a total of just under 300,000 square feet. The property was appraised at $13.7 million.
Gordmans was housed in the South Campbell property until 2019, when the company moved to the property that formerly housed Toys R Us on East Battlefield Road, according to the Springfield Business Journal. The Springfield store officially closed in 2020 after its parent company filed for bankruptcy.
